Title
Subotica Israelite Community Building, Dimitrija Tucovića str. 13, Subotica
Description
Built at the beginning of the 20th century in 1904 as a one floor community building for the Subotica Jews. Architects: Marcell Komor and Dezső Jakab, from Budapest. The style is Hungarian Art Nouveau (Secession). The building is a part of the architectural unit together with the Synagogue and the ritual slaughterhouse. The building has maintained its original function so far. Between the two World Wars, a hall, called “the winter synagogue” was established in it. The vast plastered surface of the facade is almost without ornamentations, but the middle of the wavy attic is more accented with a gable-like peak with a rosette in it. The only decorations are the plaster sashes and the red façade brick masonry in the upper zone of the building. There are sculptures of poppy cocoons on the top of the gable. The wide, two leafed entrance gate with a vaulted transom light is at the far right side of the facade. It leads to a representing doorway significantly changed during the renovation. It lost its wall painting ornamentals. The ground floor windows are arched; the first floor ones are rectangular. There is a cellar hatch on the left side of the ground floor. The zinc plate gutter vessels are stylish. The building was recently renovated. (SK/18)
